The BARF Diet Calculator (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food)
Developed by Dr. Ian Billinghurst, the BARF diet differs from the Prey Model because it includes plant matter. Proponents argue that wild dogs would consume the stomach contents of their prey (fermented grasses/berries).
While our main calculator defaults to the 80/10/10 model, you can adapt it for BARF by reducing the muscle meat slightly to accommodate 10-20% vegetables and fruit.
How to Modify Ratios for BARF
- 70%Muscle MeatReduced from 80% to make room for plant matter.
- 10%Raw Edible BoneRemains constant for calcium/phosphorus balance.
- 10%Secreting Organ5% Liver, 5% Other. Essential vitamins.
- 10%Vegetables & FruitMust be pureed or steamed for digestion (dogs cannot break down cellulose well).
Best Vegetables for the BARF Diet
When using a BARF diet calculator, focus on low-glycemic, nutrient-dense plants.
